History of Magazines

For this blog post, I will be discussing the evolution of magazines.

The history of magazines traces back to 1731 and an Englishman named Edward Cave. He published a magazine, which at the time was referred to as a "periodical", that was intended for the general public. Later on, magazines were said to have flourished in the second half of the 18th century. More than 100 magazines were present in the U.S. by the end of the 1700s. Earlier magazines were typically for the rich, since they were expensive, but eventually in the 1830s less costly magazines were made. Due to this occurring, writers were able to target different types of audiences like women and children.

Women were shown to be a highly profitable audience. In 1883, Cosmopolitan was able to sell their magazine for less than what it costed to produce due to their great circulation. Magazines really flourished in the 1900s due to the following: more people became literate, more leisure time was available, and people were able to spend money on it. Eventually, many magazines for a wider range of different people were released and were very popular. Some examples are Forbes, Sports Illustrated, Ebony, and the list goes on. Now that technology is advancing more everyday, the number of magazine readers are beginning to decrease. However, magazines did indeed play a prominent part in entertainment, and for many people it still does.
