Hello! Today I will be discussing the concept of mise-en-scène.
Mise-en-scène is a term in French that refers to the placement of different components in film. A couple of elements of film that the term refers to are the following: location, set design, costume and make-up, lighting, and color design. Without these components, the audience would not be able to grasp the depth of the film standing before them. The crew on set have to arrange the components accordingly, so that the audience is able to catch everything the director intended them to. Below are explanations of the listed elements.
- Location: The location of the scene will give the viewer an idea of where the action is taking place, which can give them a further understanding of the character(s).
- Set design: This element refers to the entire organization of the set, ultimately showing all of the components combined together for the viewer to take into account.
- Costume and make-up: These two components structure the way characters look and add depth to the scene at hand. They reveal many aspects of the scene, which can mainly provide insight on what the characters are experiencing.
- Lighting: This component refers to the arrangement of lights within the scene. Lighting can express tone and mood for the viewer to interpret.
- Color design: The color design element refers to the placement and combination of colors within the scene. The color design can convey moods, tones, ideas, and more.
